OUR STORY

We Are Cohort

If you’ve ever searched for craft breweries nearby or looked for a brewery in Rapid City or the Black Hills while craving something bold and local, you’ve probably found us. But Cohort Craft Brewery isn’t just another spot on the map of breweries in South Dakota—we’re a vibe, a story, and a community.

Cohort started with a homebrew kit and a rebellious spirit. Founder Jason Kingsbury brewed in his kitchen in the late ’90s, long before the Black Hills had a beer scene worth tasting. Fast-forward to 2020. While the world hit pause, we started brewing. We built our Rapid City location when no one else was making moves, and that gave us the freedom to create something genuine. No cookie-cutter taproom feel here, just a space that feels like your best friend’s living room, with better beer.

No Middleman. Just Beer.

Our distribution is limited. If you want our beer, you’ve got to come visit us. That’s intentional. We want you to see the tanks, meet the brewers, and feel like this is your brewery. Our staff is carefully chosen, our playlists are curated, and our food is just right. It’s all about the experience.

And yes, we’re soccer fans. Every four years, we go all in for the World Cup. We’re proud members of the American Outlaws, and that spirit flows through everything we do.

Beer For Everyone

We run one of the smallest brew systems in the state on purpose. Our 5-barrel setup means fast turnover and the freshest beer around. Nothing’s pasteurized. Nothing’s filtered. Just pure, handcrafted beer.

Even our cans are different. We chose 12 oz formats because they’re more approachable and perfect for the neighborhood vibe. Yes, we asked around—everyone wanted 12 oz.

Barrels and Craft Beer and Mead – Oh my!

Why We Brew

“Folks ask me all the time, ‘What’s your favorite beer of all time?’  This question is easy and complex all at the same time.  For me, when it comes to my favorite beer, the beer is only in part of the picture.  My favorite beer had more to do with the overall experience, not just the beer.  The beertenders, environment, who I was with, or who did I meet are the major parts of my favorite beer.  Of course the beer had to be high quality-but there is so much more.

That is what we strive for at Cohort.  Not just fantastic liquid, but the overall experience.”

-Jason Kingsbury-Owner/Master Brewer/Head Janitor
